What We Believe

Here’s what we believe at Fathom Church

Matthew 28.19-20

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

At Fathom we affirm the Apostle’s Creed:

“I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy unified church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN.”

The church should be a living, growing, communal, unified, holy, relevant family.

We value: Biblical teaching, unconditional love, authentic community, service, and creativity.

Core Values

Jesus loved beyond boundaries, traditions and comforts. He embodied the love of the Father for the world to the very end. He did not come for the righteous but the unrighteous. This love displayed in the Church breaks down old walls and rebuilds trust within the community. In Old English, Fathom means outstretched arms. This is the message of Jesus to us and us to our community. We strive to love each other at all times. This is how others will know we are sons and daughters of God.

Community built on lies, religiosity and deception is a house built on sand. We value honesty in friendships, business, teaching and worship. We are a “come as you are” community AND we are a “plan on being transformed by Jesus” community. Humility and authenticity is attractive and should be foundational for the believer.

Matthew 20.28 says the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Our hope is to live up to the challenge Jesus set before his disciples when He called them the salt and light of the earth, the light of the world and to serve the least. In service we are humbled, transformed and exalted to a greater image of Jesus on this Earth.

While creativity and the arts are a valued and vital part of who we are and what we do, they do not fulfill our mission and heart of this core value. Creativity is the belief that God is not done with humanity. He’s not done with you or me, or your neighbor or your coworker. God is not at rest with the brokenness in our world, our cities and homes. He is actively pursuing and redeeming humanity from our brokenness. We value what only God can recreate and restore in the dead parts of our community, homes and hearts. This is the mission of God. This is our greatest destination here. On earth as it is in Heaven.
